Sharing is caring!

I’m so thankful for clearance sections, Dollar tree and the thrifty shopping skills my mother has passed on to me. Put those things in action and you can create something beautiful. Things like this cute DIY Dollar Tree decor planter which is my latest obsession.

We all have done it. We’ve walked through stores looking at the beautiful home decor items wishing we could just drop $1000 on whatever we wanted and not even worry about it.

If you’re anything like me, you walk up and down the aisles and picture everything in your house and how cute it would look if you just had the endless amount of cash to pour into your home.

I don’t have endless amounts of cash and I’m always trying to come up with DIYs and cheaper ways to make the spaces in my home just as beautiful.

This DIY Dollar Tree decor planter is my new favorite! I’m still trying to figure out where to put this item. I have too many options! I’m sure I’ll move it around a million times. That is what is great about items like this is they can be used in so many different ways.

It cost less than $5.00 and takes less than 10 minutes to make! Anyone can do this! Don’t worry, I’ll help step you through it.

Step One- Gather All Supplies

The first thing you’ll want to do is set yourself up and gather all the things you’ll need for this project. These are all the things I used!

DIY Dollar Tree Decor Planter Supplies List

SUPPLIES LIST:

Planter tin from Dollar Tree
– Newspaper
Spanish Moss
Greenery
– Hot Glue

That’s it! That is all you need! I told you this would be easy!

Step Two- Fill the Planter with Newspaper

You’re going to want to fill the planter with something to give it body so that your greenery will sit just above the rim of the planter. I used newspaper because it was free and something I had on hand. It worked really well for me!

Stuff the newspaper in to make the base fairly firm but make sure you leave about 1/2 an inch to an inch from the rim of the planter free so that there’s room to put the moss and the greenery on top.

Step Three- Place Moss on Top of the Newspaper

You can get moss at any craft store in a bag for fairly cheap. Feel free to switch up different types of moss or pick something different for this step. I had spanish moss on hand so I used that.

Putting the moss on top of the newspaper hides the newspaper so when you look at the finished product, you’re seeing moss underneath the greenery and not the newspaper. It gives it more of a real plant look and adds a bit of character to the finished product.

I didn’t actually use glue for this project at all. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like how this came out or if I’d change my mind so I didn’t glue anything in.

Seeing the end result and how much I love it, I definitely would glue it next time. So go ahead and glue the moss in during this step. Stick it to the newspaper as well as the edge of the planter.

Step Four- Add Your Greenery

I got my greenery at A.C. Moore at a store close-out sale so I snagged a square of greenery for about $3.00. You can find greenery at any craft store but you might have to shop around for the best deal.

Dollar Tree did have some options of greenery, but they were a little different than what I’m using and you might have to buy a lot of it for this project.

I would suggest buying some greenery garland. You can pull each piece of greenery off the garland strand and keep the rest for a later project. This is typically what I do!

Pull off one piece of greenery at a time and carefully glue each piece into the planter stem down into the moss.

Don’t be afraid to leave small holes! Sometimes when you cram too many pieces of greenery in, it can look a bit overwhelming. Also, the reason we put the moss in was to allow holes and have it still look nice.
