How to Make Your Home Look Cohesive

In efforts to make your home look cohesive, there are some big improvements that you can make to each room. We’ll look at those first and see why they make such an impact.

STICK WITH NEUTRALS

Try to stay away from bold paint colors on the wall. If you stick to softer tones, it’s a lot easier to work the rest of the decor with the room. When you walk into a room that has such bold paint colors on the wall and the decor is mediocre, the only thing the person walking in will notice is the walls. It’s not that it can’t be done, but unless you’re a very skilled decorator, I would stick to neutrals.

Working with neutrals as a base is much easier to manage and can be easily adaptable. If you do decide to work with a lot of colors, check out 7 Tips to Make Your Decor More Eye Appealing  to find out more tips on how to work with colors so they compliment each other and work together in a space.

HAVE A HOUSE COLOR PALETTE

To help create a cohesive flow in your home, it’s beneficial to have a house color palette. Rather than having a different color or theme in each room, having a few colors that are spread throughout your whole home will help each room flow well into each other.

This is another reason why it’s easy to stick with neutrals as a base and then choose a pop of color that you might want to incorporate in each room.

STICK TO ONE STYLE

A common mistake when decorating a home is that people tend to love so many different styles. Then they end up with a variety of decor that doesn’t really flow well together. Settle on a home decor style and stick to buying items that go with that style. Having too much of a mix of styles creates confusion in the flow of your home.

You can mix some styles together but be cautious to pick styles that work together well. Modern farmhouse is a great example of two styles blending together to become one style and it is now one of the most popular home decor styles.

MIX PATTERNS AND TEXTURES

An important part when decorating your home is working in patterns and textures. Without these, rooms can tend to feel washed out and too boring. Brining in variety gives the eye more to look at and each piece helps to compliment the other.

Try not to get patterns that are too busy. The goal is to make it work with your space, not be the focal point. The entire room should be the focal point rather than specific decor.

ADD NATURAL WOOD

This is a more specific way to bring in texture and character into a space as well as preventing a room from feeling washed out. Adding natural wood works with every style and there are a variety of ways to work it in. Use wooden features in forms of bowls, frames, beads, candlesticks and so much more! You’d be surprised how much of an impact wood touches will bring to a space.

I recently just updated a few things in my kitchen and used natural wood in a few different ways. If you’re looking for some ideas, checkout some of the things I’ve done including a fridge makeover, an accent door and a table makeover.

Decorating Tips to Make Your Home Look Cohesive

While the tips above are important to the flow of your home, these items can also have a huge impact and are good go-to home decor items that shouldn’t be overlooked.

GREENERY

Greenery is a great way to add variety and texture to the space. There are many ways to use it, so many different styles and it can help just about any space look classy and fresh.

UTILIZE BOOKS

Books are another great decorating tip that will help cover some of those empty spaces on shelves or tables. Find books that have neutral or beautiful covers and stack them in different ways to bring a cozy vibe in the home. It can also be a great way to incorporate colors throughout the different rooms.

DON’T FORGET TO COVER CORNERS

This is often not discussed, but corners are a huge part of a room. Leaving corners undecorated can make the room feel unfinished. Decorating them correctly can make the room feel larger and less closed in. Try to get taller items in corners like a floor lamp or a tall plant.

THROW PILLOWS

Another great way to add texture and color is through throw pillows. Do yourself a favor and get rid of the pillows that come with your couch. Throw pillows shouldn’t match your couch. They’re there to make a statement, not blend in. Work with them to benefit your space.

CONCLUSION

From little to large changes in your space, there’s a lot that you can do to help make your home look cohesive and provide a better flow between rooms.

It can seem overwhelming but try to change things one at a time. You’d be surprised how incorporating even one of these tricks can change the flow in your home.
