Okay, so you went to Home Goods or Hobby Lobby and found some cute home decor items, but you don’t know exactly what to do with them? I have a few tips for you to make your decor more eye appealing.
I notice a lot that people seem to know what to buy for their home, but they struggle with using their decor correctly to maximize its potential.
It’s easy to find home decor that you love, but then you put it somewhere in your home and it doesn’t seem to come to life in the way you thought it should. It may have nothing to do with your decor piece, but rather how you’re styling it.
For this article, I’m mostly going to focus on styling with smaller decor items. For example, things to do when you’re trying to decorate a dresser, shelves, a media stand, or a console table.
There are certain tricks that you can do to work with your home decor to make all your items work together better. The goal is to make your decor more eye appealing to create a more cohesive look to the room as a whole.

7 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR DECOR MORE EYE APPEALING
1. THREE IS A SAFE NUMBER
Decorating items in threes tends to be a safe spot for almost anything. When decorating the top of a piece of furniture, rather than putting decor on piece by piece and spacing each item evenly, try clumping them together in threes.
You can do a variety of numbered items, but three is almost always safe.
The only time something should be by itself is if it is large enough to create that space.
2. VARIETY IS KEY
When decorating, you want to create dimension using different heights, sizes, textures and shapes. If all your decor is the same shape and height, it creates a flat and boring look. Bringing in a variety gives the eye more to look at and each piece helps to compliment the other.
Always think about incorporating a variety in whatever you’re decorating, especially if you’re using the “three rule” that I mentioned above.
When you’re placing items together, make sure they are sizes that complement each other. For example, you wouldn’t want to place a large item with two small items. Think small, medium and large.
Texture and shapes are important because putting items together that are all too similar will, again, make the decor look flat even if they are different heights. Try to mix shapes to create a balanced and more eye appealing look.
Tip: if you’re layering photos on a shelf, try to use rectangular and square frames with a variety of heights. Then add in small decor or drape greenery throughout the decor to bring in the variety and texture.

3. COORDINATE COLORS
Neutrals as a base with a pop of color added in is always a safe option. It’s easier to work off a neutral base than trying to coordinate colors correctly.
Make sure the colors complement each other and use your colors wisely in the space.
For instance, if you have a navy blue sign on one end on the room, try to add a navy blue pillow on the other side, preferably somewhat parallel to each other.
It doesn’t have to be those exact items, but keep in mind that if you put a bright or different color into the room by itself then it will stand out and be the focal point in the room. Adding that same color in another spot will draw the eye to both items in the room and creates a more cohesive look. Instead of having one decor item be the focal point, you now have the room being one collective, beautiful space.
4. UTILIZE THE SPACE CORRECTLY
Utilizing the space correctly means don’t put a small item in a large area or vice versa. Or when decorating a shelf, don’t put a short item by itself if there’s a lot of space above before the next shelf.
Make sure the item(s) work in the space they’re in. Not using the correct size decor can make the furniture look shabby and underused. Unfortunately, this has to be a judgement call. If something doesn’t feel like it looks right, then it probably isn’t.

5. LARGER ITEMS CREATE THEIR OWN SPACE
Larger items can be a saving grace in your home decor especially if you’re trying to make your home look more organized and less cluttered. A larger item can sometimes stand alone without needing more decor around it making less clutter and giving you a cleaner look.
But, remember to utilize the space correctly. Don’t put a really tall vase on a small end table.
6. CORRECT SPACING CAN MAKE OR BREAK THE LOOK
Spacing. The biggest piece of advice about spacing is DON’T FORCE IT.
Don’t feel like you need to cover the whole space. Try placing your decor in the center, on one end or both ends of the piece of furniture. If you do cover the entire space, make sure you use a variety of heights and shapes that compliment each other or else it just looks clustered and unorganized.
Don’t overcrowd the area, but also don’t leave too much empty space. However, if choosing one or the other, it’s safer to leave empty space than risk overcrowding it. Using larger items can help take up space.
7. WHEN IN DOUBT, ADD GREENERY
This is a personal option depending on your style, but greenery has saved so many spots in my home. If I’m working on decorating a piece of furniture or shelf, greenery is almost always a good resource to fall back on.
You can put it in a vase, drape it on its side to bring in texture and variety or even have it standing alone. Greenery brings so much texture and balance that is usually missing from a lot of home decor.
Try it, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. If you’re like me, it’ll soon be your favorite go-to when trying to make your decor more eye appealing.
