I did a poll on Instagram asking my audience whether or not they struggled to find home decor that fit into their budget. To my surprise, 95% of them said, “YES”. I understand the struggle on how challenging it can be to save money on home decor when it all seems so expensive.
Growing up my mom always said we were “rich is blessings”. Which was a sweet way of telling her kids that we were poor. Between watching her resourceful homemaking strategies and buying my own house at a young age, I’ve learned a lot over the years on how to get home decor that works for my budget.
That poll on Instagram inspired me to share tips that I use to save money on home decor. So, if you’re in that 95% that struggles finding affordable home decor, then I created this post for you.
9 Tips to Save Money on Home Decor
1. DIY Anything You Can
It’s no secret that this is a popular money saving home decor trend, but I get that we aren’t all crafty and it’s not everyone’s thing to DIY everything in their home. However, I do suggest doing what you can! I do quite a few DIY projects, but I don’t pick up things with motors- I’ll leave that to the hubby. It’s not my thing so I stick with DIYs that work for me and my skills!
There are a TON of easy, step by step tutorials on Pinterest for just about any DIY idea you have. You can also check out my recent favorite DIYs like my DIY Modern Farmhouse HOME Sign and my DIY Dollar Tree Decor Planter. Both are SO easy and I share tips and steps on how to create your own.
2. Use Items for Multiple Things
I like to have items in my home that I can switch up throughout the seasons. You’ll find items like this all over my house because I love to decorate for different seasons or occasions. But, it’s not always financially practical to get so many home decor items for every season, so I try to make the best of what I have and try to use a lot of items for multiple uses.
3. Have a Plan When You Shop
When you go out shopping for home decor, don’t just pick out random things and hope they look good in your house. Trust me, I have done this too many times. Sometimes things just look pretty and they’re affordable, so you must have it, right?! NO.
Have a plan for each room and how you want it to look before you go out shopping so you don’t get stuck with more items than you need or end up with things that don’t match or fit what you were going for. Having a plan and specific goals will help you stay focused and hopefully then you’ll only buy what you need.
4. Move Things Around
This one is so simple and doesn’t cost a thing! It’s not a joke, but it is kind of a mind game. I tend to get into a slump where I just want a refresh for a room and moving things around seems to do just the trick! It works for me, so hopefully it works for you.
Whenever I’m feeling a little tired of my decor, I like to switch things around. I put things in different places and it can feel like a whole new room. Just switching up a little bit can ease that need for something new and fresh- which in the long run ends up saving me money.
5. Learn How to Shop Sales and Clearance
Patience. Patience is not naturally a strong trait of mine, but I have learned the importance of patience when it comes to figuring out how to save money on home decor. You have to learn how to shop at the right times or wait for something to move to that beautiful red tagged area called “CLEARANCE”.
In an ideal world where we aren’t trying to save money on home decor, we would find an item we love and just buy it immediately. But when trying to fit things into a budget, you have to learn how stores work and adjust how you shop to watch for sales and mark-downs.
6. Don’t Depend on One Store
The problem with the way some people tend to shop is they see an item and assume that this is the only place this item is or this is the best price. I’ve saved a lot of money over the years by not just settling with one store and one option.
It’s important to shop around before just landing on whatever is currently in front of you. If this sounds overwhelming to you, check out Best Places to Buy Affordable Home Decor. I’ve already done the shopping, so in this post I share my favorite places to buy any home decor item. Need throw pillows? Check out that post to find out the best, most inexpensive places to buy them!
7. Use Items You Already Have
“Make the best the what you have!” If you’ve read any of my other blog posts, you’ve heard this phrase quite a bit. I’m a big believer in making things you already have work for your benefit.
In fact, I wrote a whole post on it. Check out Home Decor Refresh on a Budget- Using What You Already Have for ideas on how to use items you already have in your house and start getting creative with your home decor.
Sometimes what you need to spruce up a room is right in your kitchen cabinet.
8. Use Dry Flowers
Faux flowers can be EXPENSIVE, but they can add a beautiful touch to a room. One of the things I’ve been experimenting with a bit lately is drying real flowers and finding ways to decorate with them. If done correctly, they can look beautiful. Plus, if you have a large garden then this is definitely a money saver!
9. Get Creative with an Item’s Purpose
Some people have a hard time seeing past the sole purpose of an item. If you learn to get creative with different home decor items and learn how to use them for things other than what they were made for, then you’ll be able to stretch that wallet out a bit farther!
For example, I’m currently using a bathroom basket trash can as a plant pot, a coffee table as a bench, a shutter door as an accent corner piece and that’s just to name a few! There are so many different ways to use things, you just have to get creative with them and see them for more than what they were made for.
Conclusion
I really hope that if you are one of the 95% that struggle with finding affordable home decor that these tips on how to save money on home decor helped!
