DIY Christmas garland using chunky knit yarn

Sharing is caring!

We all want a beautiful, cozy Christmas. My goals when decorating for Christmas are always to find a way to mix beautiful decor and cozy vibes just enough to get the perfect look in each space. I feel like this DIY Christmas garland using chunky knit yarn is the perfect blend of beauty and cozy.

It’s currently mid-November and I have most of my Christmas decor up. It’s not too Christmassy yet, but just enough to get a little merriment into our lives. However, we like to get a real Christmas tree each year and our tradition is to go right after Thanksgiving.

My idea for this DIY Christmas garland is to wrap it around my tree. But, after making this chunky knit yarn beauty, I became obsessed with it and NEEDED to find a way to use it now until we get our tree.

Hopefully you become just as obsessed with this easy DIY Christmas garland. It took me about 10 minutes. It was so fast and easy, that I accidently made it TWICE as long as I was planning.

Seriously, this is a DIY you don’t want to pass over.

DIY Christmas Garland- Using Chunky Knit Yarn

Materials Need

  • One Skein of Chunky Knit Yarn
  • Scissors

(Yes, that’s all you need!)

Getting Started

My Christmas decor is mostly neutrals. So when picking a yarn, I was searching for a white or cream color. The chunkier, the better. I found mine at Hobby Lobby and it’s a braided chunky yarn.

However, I also found this gorgeous, chunky yarn for a better price. It’s not braided, but it will still give you the same gorgeous look. Possibly an even smoother look. So, it’s all about personal preference!

Step One

To start, you want to make a knot the end of your yarn. To do this, make a small loop crossing the end piece and having it sticking out just a bit.

make a small loop

Pinching where the yarn meets, take the yarn and wrap it around where you’re pinching, pushing it through the loop you created just enough to create another small loop.

Pull the end piece sticking out tightly to create a knot. Don’t worry about having a long tail, we’ll fix that later.

You want your loop to be about two inches wide, so pull on the yarn a bit to get the right size.

That is your starting knot and loop!

Step Two

Now that you have your starting loop, let’s get cozy! Wrap yourself in a fuzzy blanket on the couch and get ready to weave away.

Pull out a lot of excess yarn from the skein making it easily accessible.

Push the yarn through the loop you made with your knot creating another loop about the same size.

Then you want to push yarn through again making another loop.

Continue doing this pattern until you’ve reached your desired length.

It’s that simple!

If you make a mistake (like making a loop the wrong size) or want to start over, simply pull the yarn that isn’t looped in yet and it will start to unravel.

Step Three

Once you’ve reached your desired length, cut your yarn and tie another knot around your last loop to secure the yarn from unraveling.

Take the tail of the pieces you cut on both ends and weave them into the garland. This will make it so they aren’t sticking out of the end and give you a seamless look on both ends of the garland.

Step Four

Decorate with it! This will of course look great on your tree, but you could also use this DIY Christmas garland on a long entry table or TV stand. You could wrap it with greenery garland and drape it on your stair railings. The possibilities are endless! Have fun with it!
