DIY Yarn Christmas Trees

Sharing is caring!

Christmas is coming sooner than we think! So I’m prepping by DIYing some Christmas decor. I had some leftover yarn after making my DIY knit Christmas garland (no needle knitting actually involved), so I decided to make another cozy yarn DIY. Introducing, my yarn Christmas trees!

DIY Yarn Christmas Trees

These are the cutest, coziest trees! I am officially obsessed! They were INSANELY easy, so inexpensive and SO DARN CUTE.

I’m not kidding when I say these were easy. This might be my shortest DIY tutorial ever.

Let’s make DIY yarn Christmas trees!

Yarn Christmas Trees

Materials Needed

  • Styrofoam Cones
  • Chunky Knit Yarn
  • Pushpins
  • Scissors

Getting Started

Collect your materials! I had old Styrofoam cones that I had used for other projects- hence the various holes in mine. But you can snag these in various sizes at any craft store for only a few dollars! Like this one!

My Christmas decor is mostly neutrals. So when picking a yarn, I was searching for a white or cream color. For me, the chunkier, the better. I found mine at Hobby Lobby and it’s a braided chunky yarn. I had originally selected it for the finger-knitted Christmas garland I made.

However, I also found this gorgeous, chunky yarn for a better price. If I wasn’t trying to use up leftover yarn, I would’ve preferred this option! It would give the trees a smoother look.

Since I used white yarn, I also used white pushpins, so they weren’t visible. I suggest matching your pushpins to the yarn color you choose.

Step One

Start by taking an end of the yarn and placing it on the side of Styrofoam cone. Make sure you’re as close to the bottom of the cone.

Take a pushpin and secure the edge of the yarn into place.

Step Two

Gently wrap the yarn around the cone. Don’t wrap the yarn too tightly, or it’ll thin out. You want to wrap it tightly enough so it stays on the cone, but loose enough that it doesn’t sag.

The yarn sticks easily to the Styrofoam cone making this part really easy. If for some reason, the yarn does sag a bit in places, use your pins to secure it in place.

As you’re wrapping the yarn around the cone, try to keep the layers close together to prevent gaps. Some gaps are inevitable, but you can always fluff it out at the end a bit to cover them up.

Step Three

Once you’ve wrapped the yarn all the way to the top of the cone, cut the yarn at the top. Leaving you just enough to cover the top without overlapping.

Use another pushpin to secure the edge of the yarn into the top of the cone.

Step Four

Decorate with them! This is my favorite part! Here are a few ideas I had for them in my home. My favorite spot for them is with the Peace sign on top of the ottoman. I think they go so well with the DIY ottoman slipcover I made!

That’s it! Was that not the easiest thing ever?!

This could even be a fun DIY to do with kids to help get them involved in the decorating or give them something to do inside on a cold day.

I might have to buy more of the Styrofoam cones in various sizes to make more. Personally, I love styling items in threes and having a small, medium, and large.

I could not be happier with these simple DIY yarn Christmas trees and hope you enjoy this simple Christmas, cozy DIY!

The neutral white has my heart, but what color would you choose?
