DIY Faux Clay Vase

Sharing is caring!

Scrolling through Instagram I’ve been seeing so many people showcasing their beautiful DIY faux clay vases using just paint and baking soda. I immediately had to jump in and try to see if this was a hoax or if I could really transform an old vase to be a clay beauty. The process was so simple and I’m so excited to share how you can also make your very own DIY faux clay vase.

DIY Faux Clay Vase

Step One

Find an old vase that you’d like to transform into a DIY faux clay vase. I tried this out on a glass vase, but any type should work for this project. You can pull out that old one that’s been sitting in storage because you haven’t figured out just how to decorate it or shop some thrift stores and find a rare beauty to bring home.

Step Two

Mix your paint and baking soda in a bowl. I used two acrylic paint colors to find the perfect color that I wanted, but any color should work. There’s no specific ratio of paint verses baking soda. If you want the vase to be more textured, go heavy on the baking soda. If you just want a subtle texture, add more paint.

Step Three

Paint your mixture on the vase. Generously apply the paint onto your vase with a paint brush. Move the paint around to get the texture and look you want. I only did one coat with a generous amount of paint, but use your judgement and personal preference.

Painting the Vase

If you’re working with a glass or ceramic vase, brush strokes are most likely going to be slightly noticeable, so take that into consideration as your moving the brush around. I moved my brush around the vase rather than brush top to bottom. I also intentionally left clumps of paint and imperfections to give the vase more character.

When painting on glass, keep in mind that the paint takes extra long to bond to the surface and will dry slowly. If you want to help bond the materials together more securely, you can spray a clear coat sealant on the vase once it’s dry.

Step Four

Style your new DIY faux clay vase! Grab some greenery or some flowers and find that perfect spot in your home for that beautiful vase!
